Pankaj Saharia : Preventing Structural Failures

As a talented and respected structural engineer Pankaj Saharia is dedicated to providing the highest quality designs that are safe and secure. There are many reasons why structural failure takes place, and he knows that education and constant analysis are key to ensure sound structures. When building materials undergo high amounts of stress, damage may occur that can affect the load-bearing capability of one component or the structure in its entirety. If a structure is designed well, it should be able to handle a local failure without causing any serious problems to the integrity as a whole. Structural engineers should have a distinct plan to avoid these problems in the design.

Structural failures can be avoided by employing evaluation methods, such as risk assessment and soil analysis before construction. It’s important to keep weathering in mind, that a structure will be able to handle the weight of people, rain, and snow in addition to the weight of the structure itself. Structures should also be able to handle seismic activity, which should be taken into account in regard to the type of terrain as well.
It’s crucial that construction workers and safety personnel regularly inspect ongoing projects. While failure may be a result of poor design, planning, and lack of monitoring, structural issues often occur because of bad construction practices, such as using low-quality steel or concrete, incorrect riveting, and improper welding.

Pankaj Saharia has received an award from the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Transatlantic Program Center for his contributions and expertise regarding an Overhead Coverage System in Iraq
